What exactly is a copywriter?

Spill the tea - Blog Version

I really have to hand it to Dan.

When I told him I wanted to start learning copywriting, he was all in! He said, “Sounds great! You’ll be amazing at it.” Little did I know, for the first two weeks, Dan thought I was learning copyrighting. He had no idea what copywriting was but believed in me enough to know I’d figure it out.

Now, if you’re also not 100% sure what copywriting is (no shame – Dan didn’t either), let me clear it up.

What is Copywriting?

According to Wikipedia, copywriting is the art and occupation of writing text for the purpose of advertising or marketing. The goal is to sell products or services.

Think of every commercial you’ve watched, every catchy billboard, that website you couldn’t stop reading, or even that sales page that convinced you to buy another course on sourdough baking(🙋🏻‍♀️). They all have one thing in common: they were crafted by a copywriter.

A copywriter doesn’t just need strong writing skills—they also need to know people. To get you to act, they use the right words, at the right time, for the right audience.

Since starting my own journey in copywriting, I’ve learned a ton of strategies—like using psychological frameworks that naturally guide readers down the page to take action. Did you know FOMO (the fear of missing out) is a scientifically-backed tactic?

But here’s the thing: I’m not about using sleazy sales tricks. There’s a shift happening in the world of copywriting. It’s no longer about tricking people into buying something they don’t need.

I’m part of a new wave of copywriters who use an ethical, holistic approach. The goal? To attract clients who genuinely align with your business.

Today’s buyers are more cautious than ever—they’ve got trust issues, and I can’t blame them.

That’s where I come in. Like a lightsaber, copywriting is a powerful tool. And just like in Star Wars, it’s important it’s wielded by the right person. I can help keep your copy on the Light Side of the sales force. (Sorry, I’m a little obsessed with Star Wars at the moment).
